Day of Admission
Fasting
Patients undergoing local anaesthetics do not require to fast.
Patients undergoing regional block anaesthetics or general anaesthetic should fast from 12 midnight for morning lists and 7am for afternoon lists. You sip water or other drinks (with a small amount of milk) up to when you are sent for to go to theatre.
Please consult with the nursing staff on the wards if you have any questions or doubt.
Time of admission at The Yorkshire Clinic
My theatre lists will occur on Fridays, the theatre admissions team will discuss the arrangements for admission on confirming your booking.
For local anaesthetic procedures performed in the minor theatre suite you will be given a timed slot to arrive, be admitted and then have your surgery. It is likely you will be with us for 60-90 minutes even for a small procedure.
For other procedures performed in main theatres you will be admitted to Ward 1 or Ward 2 around 7.30 am for the morning session and 12.30 pm for the afternoon session. Whilst we would like to offer a stepped admission for all patients it unfortunately is not practical as Mr Jeffers and the Anaesthetist would need to stop and leave theatre for every single admission. We therefore admit you as groups for efficiency, safety and practicality.
Time of admission at Bradford Royal Infirmary
My all day theatre list occur on Thursday, you will be informed of the details by our waiting list team or my personal assistant Sarah.
At present patients are either admitted to the Orthopaedic Admission Unit (next to ward 28) for simpler procedures and Ward 14 (our ring fenced ultra-clean orthopaedic ward) for more major procedures.
For morning elective lists, this is usually 7.30am to allow the nursing staff, the anaesthetist and Mr Jeffers to see you pre-operatively.
For afternoon trauma lists, you should fast at home and will be admitted at 11am, Mr Jeffers' surgical team and the anaesthetist will see you during lunchtime to complete your admission.
Mr Jeffers also performs some local anaesthetic lists in the newly opened Hand Unit which is situated on level 0. For these lists we will give you a booked time to arrive.
Discharge
This usually occurs on the same day, only patients undergoing the most complex operations or the need for specialist therapy input the following day will stay overnight.
You will need to be picked up and taken home. You will be unable to drive as your arm will be in a sling and if you have had a regional anaesthetic your arm may be still numb. You will be given strong painkillers such as anti-inflammatories and co-codamol as take home medication.
