Local Anaesthetics
Having a local anaesthetic administered by Mr Jeffers means you can fully in control and do not have to have a general anaesthetic.
This technique is called wide awake hand surgery. It is extremely safe and involves Mr Jeffers injecting a small volume of anaesthetic into your hand, wrist or elbow.
The local anaesthetic injections are not painless - much as it is not painless to have blood taken - nearly all patients who are willing to try it have been able to tolerate it without difficulty. Most patients have skin lumps and bumps removed comfortably using local anaesthetic and this is very similar.
It has significant benefits for elderly patients and patients with multiple medical problems because it allows the avoidance of the risks, expenses and inconveniences of sedation and general anaesthesia. While modern anaesthesia is very safe it does have risks and complications - nausea, vomiting, sore throat, shivering, damage to teeth, damage to the eye, post operative chest infection, post operative confusion, serious allergy (anaphylaxis).
It is the preferred anaesthesia for many of the more minor operations such as carpal tunnel, trigger finger, De Quervians and tennis elbow release. Surgery on the finger for tendon repair, joint fusion, fracture fixation and removal of lumps is also possible with this technique.
